5-2x<9 subtract 5 from both sides

-2x < 4 divide both sides by -2 and reverse the inequality sign

x > -2

1-x<4x<7-x the idea here is to just get "x" in the middle by itself......add x to everything

1 < 5x < 7 divide everything by 5

1/5 < x < 7/5
