-7 to the power of 2

Do you want (-7)² = 49  or  -(7²) = -49 ?

.

I if it is just written as    $$-7^2$$     it means    $$-1*7^2=-1*49=-49$$

 

so

 

$$-7^2=-49$$

 

This confuses everybody at first!
