Trinomials in the form ax 2 + bx + c can be more difficult to factor when the coefficient a is a number other than 1. However, if the value of a can be factored out, the trinomial can still be factored using a more simple method. Factor out 3 from the trinomial 3x2 - 12x + 12 so that the value of a will change from 3 to 1.
Factoring out just means divide through by 3 kinda reverse distributive law
3 ( x^2 - 4x + 4) = 3x ^2 -12x + 12
= 3 ( x-2)(x-2)
