A diameter of a circle is cut at right angles by a chord into a 12 cm segment and a 4 cm segment. How long is the chord?

The diameter will bisect the chord in this situation........and we can use  the intersecting chords rule ......

 

4 * 12  = x * x     where x is half the chord length......so we have...

 

48 =  x^2       take the square root of each side

 

4√3 cm =  x         so....the chord is twice this length =  8√3 cm
