JAMIE and TARA fold T-shirts at a factory. They trialled over a number of occasions to find out how many T-shirts they could fold per minute. Their results are listed below.
JAMIE: Mean = 37/min and Standard deviation n-1 = 2/min
TARA: Mean = 37/min and Standard Deviation n-1 = 5/min
Use mathematical reasoning to determine who is the more consistent folder of T-shirts.
Sorry i dont know how to use the actual formula symbols for standard deviation and the mean symbol on this but please help explain how to use the mathmatical reasoning because i am lost
The standard deviation indicates the closeness of the data to the mean.
For Jamie, a mean of 37 and a standard deviation of 2 means that the greatest proportion of her output is 37 ± 2 mins. This means that 68% of her output is between 35 and 39 minutes.
For Tara, a mean of 37 and a standard deviation of 5 means that the greatest proportion of her output is 37 ± 5 mins. This means that 68% of her output is between 32 and 42 minutes.
Therefore Jamie is the more consistent (the smaller the standard deviation, the greater the consistency).
