A lighthouse is 75 m tall. The captain of a small boat drops anchor offshore from the base of the lighthouse. The lighthouse keeper measures an angle of depression of 22 from the top of the lighthouse to the boat. How far is the boat from the base of the lighthouse? Include a sketch, and draw the triangle you will use to solve the problem

We can use the tangent to find this........

tangent 68  = d/75     where d is the distance the boat is from the light house      multiply both sides by 75

75* tangent  68 = d = about 185.63 m

Here's a rough sketch....DAB is the angle of depression.....CA is the lighthouse height....and CB is the distance from the boat to the lighthouse

cool cool cool
