A paint manufacturer desires a cylindrical steel drum to hold 50 gal. of paint. For convenience in handling, it is found neccessary to limit the inside diameter to 2.5 ft. Find the height of the drum desired. (1 gallon = 231 cu. in.)

The drum needs to hold   (50 x 231) in^3  = 11550 in^3   ....and the radius = 2.5/2 ft = 1.25 ft = 15 in

So we have

11550  = pi * (15)^2 * h

11550 = 225 pi * h        divide both sides by 225 pi

11550 / (225 pi) = h = about 16.34 in
