A painter’s rectangular drop sheet (a plastic sheet used for covering furniture to protect it from paint) has a perimeter of 10m and its length is 1.4m longer than its width.
(a) Write an equation for the perimeter of the drop sheet. Let x = width.
(b) Find the width of the sheet.
(c) Write an equation for the area of the drop sheet in terms of x.
(d) Expand this equation and simplify if possible.
(e) Calculate the area of the drop sheet.
2 ((1.4 + x) + x) = 10
2.8 + 4x = 10
4x = 7.2
x = 7.2/4 = 1.8 m = Width
Width = x Length = 1.4 + x Area = WIdth x Lenght Area = x (1.4 + x) or x^2 + 1.4x = 1.8^2 + 1.4 (1.8) = 5.76 m^2
Or:
We know width = 1.8 And Lenght = 1.4 + 1.8 = 3.2 Width x Length = Area = 1.8 x 3.2 = 5.76 m^2
