A piggy bank contains nickels dimes and quarters totaling $3.05. The number of dimes is three more that twice the number of nickels. If the bank contains 30 coins, then the number of nickels plus the number of quarters is.

Let the number of nickels =N

The number of dimes =2N + 3

The number of quarters =30 - [N + 2N + 3]

0.05N + 0.10[2N+3] + 0.25[30 - (N+2N+3)] = 3.05, solve for N,

N = 8 - Nickels

2 x 8 + 3 =19 - Dimes

30 - (8+19) = 3 - Quarters.

8 + 3 = 11 - Number of Nickels and Quarters.

(8 x 0.05) + (19 x 0.10) + (3 x 0.25) =$3.05.
