A rectangular auditorium seats 1833 people. The number of seats in each row exceeds the number of rows by 8. Find the number of seats in each row.

Let x  = number of rows.....then (x + 8)   = the seats on each row

 

And we have that

 

x (x + 8)  = 1833

 

x^2 + 8x  - 1833 = 0          factor

 

(x - 39) (x + 47)  =  0

 

Setting the frist factor to 0 is the only one that makes sense   .....so......x - 39  = 0  →   x  = 39  = the number of rows

 

And the number of seats in each row  is 8 more than this  = 47
