Hi Eloise,

Have you ever thought about why $${{\mathtt{7}}}^{{\mathtt{4}}}$$ is just 7 to the power of 4 BUT

$${{\mathtt{7}}}^{{\mathtt{2}}}$$  is not usually called 7 to the power of 2?    $${{\mathtt{7}}}^{{\mathtt{2}}}$$  is usually referred to as 7 squared.

$${{\mathtt{cm}}}^{{\mathtt{2}}}$$  literally means a square that is 1cm by 1cm big.

The area of a flat shap is the number of SQUARES that you can fit inside the shape.

So if a square has an area of 25 $${{\mathtt{cm}}}^{{\mathtt{2}}}$$   Then it must look like this.

You can count the little squares.  Each one is 1cm by 1cm in size so each one is 1cm^2

There are 25 of them.

the area of a square is Length x Length

$$\\L * L = L^2\\\\
L^2=25\\\\
\sqrt{L^2}=\sqrt{25}\\\\
L=5 cm$$

If it is a square then just take the squareroot of the area to find the side length. It is the squareroot of 25 so the sides are 5 cm.
