The angle, the height of the tree, and the shadow of the tree form a right triangle.

The height of the tree is the side opposite the angle and the shadow is the side adjacent to the angle.

tan  =  opposite / adjacent

tan(26o)  =  height / shadow

tan(26o)  =  height / 27

tan(26o) · 27 = height.

Use a calculator to find the value of tan(26o) · 27 ...

A tree casts a shadow of 27 meters when the angle of elevation of the sum is 26 degrees. Find the height of the tree to the nearest meter.

Tan(26) = Height / Shadow

Tan(26) =H / 27

0.4877325 =H / 27

H =27 x 0.4877325

H =12.681 or ~13 meters - height of the tree.
