A watermelon weighs nine tenth of its weight plus 9/10 of a pound. If I eat a slice consisting of 1/9 of the watermelon, what is the weight of the slice? Thanks for the help.

Let the total weight = W and we have that
(9/10)W + (9/10)lb = W subtract (9/10)W from each side
(9/10)lb = (1/10)W multiply through by 10
9lb = W
So......(1/9) of this = 1 lb
