 When in school I could not get this type of basic algebra right, I am embarassed to ask .

  Here is an example of the type of question. I made this up as an example of the way this "age problem" was written, I was supposed to turn the question into an equation in order to find the answer.  Please excuse my ignorance, this is about as good an example I can think of.                                                                           

  Bill is 33, Frank is older than Bill. Frank's freind Bob is 3 years younger than Frank. How old is Frank?

Frank could be any age over 33.  You have not given enough information to solve this one. :)
