Susie is 4 years old and Cindy is 2 years old. Their father, Terry, is 30 years old. How long will it be before the sum of the children's ages is half of his?

Can you explain the answer with x's because I'm doing algebra.

Thank you!

Let x  be  the  number of years we are looking for

(4 + x)  + ( 2 + x)   =  (30 + x)  /  2

6 + 2x  =   (30 + x)  / 2           multiply through by 2

12 + 4x  =  30 + x

4x - x  =   30  -  12

3x  =  18

x  =  18 / 3    =   6 yrs

Proof

10   + 8  = 18

36/2  =  18

Thank you, why do you add an x to each of their ages?  I thought x was the number of years that we are looking for.
