If you can imagine looking straight ahead (neither up nor down) then this is zero elevation or depression. If you look up at an object (perhaps a star) the straight line from your eyes to the star is the line of elevation (going up). If you were to look down (at a stone) then the straight line from your eyes to the stone would be the line of depression (going down).
