3 is 5/7 of the way from -2 to 5

-1/7  is 5/7 of the way from 7 to -3      a = -1/7

1. We can find the slope of the line: (-3-7)/(5-(-2)) = -10/7.

2. Plug in the point (3,a) to find the slope: (-3-a)/(5-3) = -10/7.

3. Cross multiply to get the equation: -20 = -21 - 7a.

This gives us -1/7 = a.

Hope this helped!
