R = hours Ryan worked

K = hours Kari worked

R + K = 28

R = K + 4 or R - K = 4

combining the two equations:

2R = 32

R = 16

Ryan worked 16 hours, so Kari worked 12 hours.

Ryan: 16 hours

Kari: 12 hours

Find 2 numbers that equal 28 (14 + 14) Take 2 away from one, then add that 2 to the other one(14 - 2 = 12. (other): 14 + 2 = 16)

edit: I know your answer was right, but you didn't show all the steps, nor a system of equations. Some teachers can be very picky about showing the work.
