Two trains travel in opposite directions, starting from the same location.One leaves at noon,while the other leaves an hour later, traveling 20 mph faster. If they both travelled the same distance by 1:15 pm, what was the speed of the slower train?

Distance  =  Rate • Time

DA  =  (x mph) (1.25 hr)  =  (1.25x) mi

DB  =  (x + 20 mph) (0.25 hr)  =  (0.25x + 5) mi

    DA  =  DB

1.25x  =  0.25x + 5

1.00x  =  5

       x  =  5 mph     (slower train)

check answer

Does  (5 mph 1.25 hr) = (25 mph 0.25 hr)  ?

                          6.25 mi = 6.25 mi   True
