A baseball is hit in the air. Its height above the ground is described by the functionHt=-16t^2+45t+5, where H(t) represents the height in feet of the ball t seconds after it is hit. To the nearest hundredth of a second, for how much time will the ball be in the air? Find algebraically.

H  =  -16t^2  +  45t   +  5

Find  the  zeroes

16t^2  -  45t  -  5   =  0

Using  the  quadratic formula

         45  ±  sqrt  ( 45^2  - ( 4)(-5) (16)  )

t =   _____________________________         2.92   sec   or   -.11  sec

                       2 * 16

Take  the positive answer  =   2.92  sec
