A gallon of paint can cover 500 square feet. Find how many gallons (to the nearest gallon) should be purchased to paint two coats on each wall of a rectangular room whose dimensions are 22 feet by 24 feet by 24 feet with 8-foot ceiling.

Two walls are  22 x8 = 176x2= 352 sq ft

two walls are   24 x8 = 192x2= 384

Total sq ft  = 384 + 352 = 736       We want TWO coats so  736 x2 = 1472 sq ft

1472/500 =~ 3 gallons

Surface Area of a solid rectangle = 2(L*W + H*W + H*L)

2(L*W + H*W + H*L)=2[22*24 + 8*22 + 8*24]

2[528 + 176 + 192] =

2[896]=1,792 square feet

1,792/500=3.584 gallons of paint for 1 coat.

3.584 X 2=7.168 or about 7 gallons needed for 2 coats of paint.
