Assuming you're solving for "h"...

First, get rid of the -12 by adding the number 12 to both sides. (Remember that adding is opposite of subtracting. Kindergarten stuff...) You do this first because it's reverse order-of-operations when you're solving for something.
So, you have 2(h-8)-12 +12=8 +12.
Now the -12 is canceled out by the +12. Then you add 12 and 8 and you get 20.
Now you have 2(h-8)=20.
Next, you can solve out 2(h-8) without worrying about that 12 confusing you. You have the two parts of this side now in play. 2(h-8) becomes 2(h) and 2(-8). 2 times -8 is just -16, so let's stick with that.
Then you have 2h-16=20.
Cancel out the -16 the same way you got rid of -12. Add sixteen to both sides.
Then you'll get 2h-16+16=20+16.
Simplify this to 2h=36.
Finally, since multiplying is the opposite of dividing, divide both sides by 2 so that the h is alone.
(2h)/2=36/2
Simplify this. It's the last thing you have to do, then you have your answer.
h=18
