Jared has some quarters and dimes that total $5.50. If he has 8 more quarters than dimes, how many dimes does he have?

Call the number of dimes, x  ... the tne number of quarters is x + 8...

So we have...

.10(x) + (.25)(x + 8) = 5.50  simplify

.10x + .25x + 2  = 5.50    subtract 2 on both sides

.35x = 3.50      divide by .35 on each side

x = 10    and this is the number of dimes

x + 8  = 10 + 8  = 18   and this is the number of quarters
