Jared has some quarters and dimes that total $5.50. If he has 8 more quarters than dimes, how many dimes does he have?
Call the number of dimes, x ... the tne number of quarters is x + 8...
So we have...
.10(x) + (.25)(x + 8) = 5.50 simplify
.10x + .25x + 2 = 5.50 subtract 2 on both sides
.35x = 3.50 divide by .35 on each side
x = 10 and this is the number of dimes
x + 8 = 10 + 8 = 18 and this is the number of quarters
