I drove to the beach at a rate of 40 miles per hour. If I had driven at a rate of 38 miles per hour instead, then I would have arrived 10 minutes later. How many miles did I drive?

d/40     =   d/ 38   -   1/6          ( 1/6 hr = 10 minutes )

d =   1/6 / ( 1/40 - 1/38) = 126 2/3 mile

First, solve for how long it took to drive it. 

However fast he drove, he went the same distance so D40 = D38  

And Distance = Velocity • Time  

 

(40 • T)  =  (38 • (T + 1/6) )      note that we're solving for miles per hour so 10 minutes is 1/6 of an hour  

 

     40T   =  38T + 38/6   

        2T  =  38/6  

          T  =  19/6  

 

Distance  =  Velocity • Time  

 

            D  =  (40) • (19/6)  

            D  =  760/6  

            D  =  126.67 miles
