A candle is 17 inches tall after burning for 3 hours. After 5 hours, it is 15 inches tall. Write a linear equation to model the relationship between height h of the candle and time t. Predict how tall the candle will be after burning for 8 hours.

Starts out 17 inches tall   y intercept = b = 17

each hour burns (15-17)/2 = -1 in/hr  = m = slope

at t= 0 the candle would have been

17 + 3(1) = 20 inches tall at t= 0 when it was lit = b = h intercept

 

h = -t + 20            when t = 5     height (y) = 15 inches    Check!

 

in 8 hours   h = -8+20 = 12 inches tall
