In Australian slang - mate is only used for males and i don't know if if my anonymous friend is male or female. So mate would not be appropriate.
In Australian slang, 'mate' just means 'good friend' It is usually only used when referring to males. (although there are exceptions.)
eg Jim and his mates are at the golf course. This would be a normal sentence in Australia. It would be fairly universally used by both high and low status people.
The female equivalent might be Donna and the girls have gone out. (Used for all ages)
I suppose if said my son and his partner (the partner is a girl) had their mates over to watch sports, then 'the mates' could be male and female.
