Find the smallest value of x such that x^2 + 10x + 25 = 18.

First, move everything to the left side.

 

\(x^2+10x+7=0\)

 

use the binomial theorem to get \(x=-5+3√2, x=-5-3√2\)

 

The smaller answer is the second one, so that's the answer.

x^2 +10x+7 = 0    Use quadratic fromula     a = 1     b = 10    c = 7

\(x = {-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac} \over 2a}\)     to find x =  -5 +-  3sqrt 2     Pick the smaller one................
