Find the value of k if the line y = x + k is tangent to the graph of y = x^2.

The first derivative is the slope of a curve at any point along it and is tangent to the curve at that point.  

 

The first derivative of y = x2 is 2x   so in order to satisfy y = x + k, then k would equal x.  That is x + x = 2x.
