Tom and Sam had $62 altogether. Sam and Amy had $34 altogether. Tom had three times as much money as Amy.

t + s = 62       t = 3a   results in   

3a + s = 62    multiply by -1

-3a -s = - 62

s + a = 34       given     now add to the equation above

 

-2a = -28

a = 14           t = 3a = 42    and     s = 20  dollars each
