hi Saseflower,
You can check your answer but substituting 13.3 in for x on the right hand side of the question and seeig if it equals 172.
like this
-6*13.3-4(4*13.3-10)
$${\mathtt{\,-\,}}{\mathtt{6}}{\mathtt{\,\times\,}}{\mathtt{13.3}}{\mathtt{\,-\,}}{\mathtt{4}}{\mathtt{\,\times\,}}\left({\mathtt{4}}{\mathtt{\,\times\,}}{\mathtt{13.3}}{\mathtt{\,-\,}}{\mathtt{10}}\right) = {\mathtt{\,-\,}}{\frac{{\mathtt{1\,263}}}{{\mathtt{5}}}} = -{\mathtt{252.6}}$$
It doesn't equal the left hand side which was 172 so x cannot be equal to 13.3.
Understand?
172 = -6x - 4(4x - 10)
First use distributive property
173 = -6x - 16x + 40
Combine like terms
173 = 10x + 40
Now subtract 40 to both sides
133 = 10x
Divide both sides by 10
13.3 = x
P.S I might have did something wrong, I'm not sure but I just wanted to warn you :)
172 = -6x - 4(4x - 10) distribute the "-4 " over the terms in the parentheses
172 =-6x - 16x + 40 combine like terms on the right
172 = -22x + 40 subtract 40 from both sides
132 = -22x divide by -22 on each side
-6 = x
Don't worry about it, saseflower.....you just made a slight error when you combined -6x and -16x .....I gave you points for a good effort...
[Also, where did the "173" come from ??? ]
