A fruit stand has 5 bags of apples with 8 apples in each bag. There are 3 more apples on the shelf next to the bags. How many total apples are at the fruit stand?

If there are 5 bags of apples with 8 apples in each, that means that there are 5*8= 40 apples. Since there are 3 more apples next to the bags, then the answer is 40+3= 43 apples.
