Which set of lengths could make a triangle?


3 in., 6 in., 4 in.
4 in., 12 in., 6 in.
9 in., 2 in., 15 in.
8 in., 5 in., 3 in.

It can't be the last two because

9 + 2 < 15

And

3 + 5  is not greater than 8   (this choice produces a "degenerate" triangle....one with "0" area)

 

Only the first choice is correct

This is known as the "Triangle Inequality"...for our purposes here.....it says that the sum of any two sides of a triangle  is greater than the remaining side.....

Knowing this......see if you can figure this out.....

Hint......the second choice is no good because  4 + 6 < 12.....!!!
