Tyler has a rectangular garden that measures 10 m wide by 13 m long. He wants to increase the area to 208 m² by increasing the width and length by the same amount. What will be the length (longer dimension) of the new garden?
(10+x)(13+x) = 130 + 208
130 + x ^2 + 23x - 338 = 0
x^2 + 23x -208 = 0 x = 6.95 13 + 6.95 =~ 19.95 m
(10+x)(13+x) = 208
x = 3
The length will be 16 m
x^2 + 23x -208 = 0 x = 6.95 13 + 6.95 = ~ 19.95 m
This answer is for increasing the area by 208 not TO 208 See second answer!
