A 10-foot by 12-foot room with a ceiling that is 9 feet high is being painted on all four walls. There is one 3-foot by 6-foot window on two walls and a 3.5-foot by 6.5-foot door on the other two walls. How many square feet of wall space will be painted if all four walls are painted?

Wall space  if no windows  and  no doors (1)  =  9 (10 + 10 + 12 + 12) =  9 ( 44)  = 396 ft^2

Subtract   windows and doors square footage =   2  (3*6  + 3.5 * 6.5)  =  2 ( 18 + 22.75)  = 2 ( 40.75)  =

81.5 f^2

So

396  - 81.5    =

314.5 ft^2  =  sq ft to be painted
