Imagine the shape as a rectangle with its corners cut off.

The length of the rectangle would be 12 ft + 5 ft = 17 ft.

The width is given as 14 ft.

Therefore, the area of the rectangle is 17*14 = 238 square ft.

 

For the corners, use bh/2 to find their area.

The unknown leg of the red "corner" triangle is (14 - 7)/2 = 3.5 ft. 

The area of the red "corner" is hence (3.5*5)/2 = 8.75 square feet.

 

To find the final area, subtract 2 times the area of the corner(since there are 2 corners missing) from the area of the rectangle:

238 - 2*8.75 = 220.5 square ft.
