The arithmetic mean of 23, 16, 30, 33 and two other numbers that differ by 2 is 27. If the smallest of these 6 numbers is discarded, find the arithmetic mean of the remaining 5 numbers.

If the mean of 6 numbers is 27, their total sum is 6*27=162. 162-23-16-30-33=60 so the sum of the other two numbers is 60. We know the 2 numbers differ by 2 so 2x-2=60 when x is the greater of the 2. That means x is 31 so one number is 31 and the other is 29. Once we remove the number 16, the total sum becomes 146. Therefore the arithmetic mean is 29.2.
