Which property are you using when you solve 5x is > or = 30 by dividing each side by 5?

I was sick and absent when we went over this in class. I would appreciate if you could explain how to get the answer.

Many thanks.

It's the old "see saw - tetter totter" property.  smiley

Why does it have to be a property?

\(5x\ge30\)

You are dividing the left hand side by 5 because you want to get the x by itself.

and

you are dividing the rhs by 5 becasue the equation must stay balanced.

Think of an equation like a  see saw or tetter totter or balance scale.

If it is balanced that is the 2 sides are equal then if you change one side then you must change the other side in the same way if you want it to remain balanced.

\(5x\ge30\\ \frac{5x}{5}\ge\frac{30}{5}\\ x\ge6\\\)

Note that a division is the same as a fraction line.

You are actually using the "multiplicative inverse" property.....this says that    (1/a) * a    = 1

So......    (1/5) * 5x   =  1x  = x

However......the "see-saw teeter-totter" property does have a certain ring to it......!!!!
