The graph of y = (5x^2 - 9)/(x^2 + 5x + 2) has vertical asymptotes at x = a and x = b. Find a + b.

Whatever x's  make the denominator = 0  are the asymptotes.....these are also the roots of the polynomial

So

x^2 + 5x + 2  =  0

By Vieta, the sum of the  roots =  -5

So

a + b =   -5
