this question relates to light vehicle engine mechanical systems. A 4 cylinder engine has a bore of 75mm and stroke of 88.3mm, Using the information given (Show formula used and working out, p=3.14, answers to 2 decimal places) answer the following:

 

a) Calculate the cubic capacity of the engine.

 

b. If the clearance volume is 22.95cc what is the compression ratio

 

c. State whether this vehicle is most likely to be petrol or diesel.

cubic capacity   =    4    * 1/2 pi (75/2)^2  * 88.3  = 780194.9  mm3 =780 .19 cc

(780.19 +4*22.95)/ (4*22.95) = 9.5        comp ratio = 9.5:1

gasoline engine

      diesel engines have compression ratios in upper teens to twenty-ish
