that number bernice is thinking of will be called n as the variable, multiply n by 3, or 3n, then subtract 5  to get a result of 40

 

full equation:

 

3n-5=40

   +5  +5

 

3n=45

/3   /3

 

n=15

 

put it back in the original equation we had

 

3n-5=40 ---> 3(15)-5=40 or 3*15-5=40--->45-5=40

 

the number is 15

Obviously 15.

 

40 + 5 / 3 = 15
