The formula for finding the surface area of a sphere, such as a baseball or a basketball, is A=4(pie)r(r) {A=four pie r squared), where r is the radius. The formula for finding the volume of a sphere is V=4/3(pie)r(r)(r) {V=4/3pie r cubed}

a. Calculate the surface area and the volume of the baseball and the basketball. Then, write the ratio of surface area to volume for each sphere.

b. Infer If the baseball and basketball were cells, which would possess a larger ratio of area of cell membrane to cell volume?

What you mean by "pie" is π (Press ALT + P to get the symbol), which is equal to 3.142 (rounded to 3 figures).

By the way, what is r equal to?

Lets just substitute, that r = 5.

a) Surface area of ball = 4π r2

                                    = 4π * 25

                                    = 100π

   Volume of ball          = 4/3 π r3

                                   = 4/3 π * 125

                                   = 500π / 3

   Ratio (Area:Volume)= 100π : 500π / 3

  (multiply by 3)          = 300π : 500π

  (cancel π and zeros)= 3       : 5

Answer: 3 : 5

b) I don't know. I'm a sixth grader, who studies 7th and 8th grade in Mathematics only. In English and Science I don't. This question is topic on science, and I only learnt parts of a cell, and their functions, not the volume.
