Can a linear equation and a linear inequality be solved in the same way?

Yes - they are almost the same.

the only difference is that sometimes you have to turn the sign around.

Turn the sign if

1.  You multiply or divide both sides by a negative number.

2. You swap sides

3. You take the reciprocal of both sides

 

That is it :)
