This is a Challenge math problem that was on my math book.

Challenge The function y=xhas a U-shaped graph called a parabola. If the domain of this function is given as x≥0 and x≤4, find the range.

Please help me. Thanks.

If the domain is from x=0 to x = 4 then the range of y = x2 is from y = 0 to y = 16.  It includes all real numbers not just integers.

It often helps to draw a graph:

The range can be written as:

Y≥0

Which means Y must be greater than or equal to 0.

The range is for integers of 0^2, 1^2, 2^2, 3^2, 4^2

These are 0, 1, 4, 9, 16

The range is 0 to 16 answer is these squared that is 0, 1, 4, 9, 16 is answer

So range is 0 to 16 include 16

Please excuse bad English

Thank you

Yes as Alan has shown you,

If the domain is confined to  $$0\le x\le4$$

then the range is   $$0\le y \le 16$$
