x + y  =  5.8

y  =  2x - 5

Since the second equation is solved for y, substitute that value into the first equation:

x + (2x - 5)  =  5.8

  x + 2x - 5  =  5.8                     Now, combine the x and 2x terms:

        3x - 5  =  5.8                     Add 5 to both sides:

             3x  =  10.8                   Divide by 3:

               x  =  3.6

Substitute this value into either of the equations:

y  =  2x - 5   --->   y  =  2(3.6) - 5  =  7.2 - 5  =  2.2
