Tickets to a movie cost $7.25 for adults and $5.50 for students. a group of friends purchased 8 tickets for $52.75. How many adult tickets and students tickets were purchased.

I need to see all work for this because I am very confused.

Let  x  = number of adults and y be the number of students

So  x + y  = 8    subtract x from both sides     ⇒      y = 8 - x   (1)

And number of adults * cost per ticket + number of students * cost per ticket  = total cost

So    x * 7.25  +  y * 5.50  = 52.75   (2)

Sub (1) into (2)   and we have

x * (7.25)  +  ( 8 - x) * 5.50  =  52.75     simplify

7.25x + 44 - 5.50x  =  52.75

1.75x + 44  =  52.75      subtract 44 from both sides

1.75 x  =  8.75    divide both sides by 1.75

x =  5 adult tickets

And since there were 8 total, the other 3 must be the number of children's tickets
