This is a simplistic view. There is a mathsisfun web page that deals with this more fully :)
Each number term has degree 0 (zero).
Any term which has one or more variable has a degree equal to the number of variables; so, 3x has degree 1 (because there is one variable, the 'x').
Any expression with more than one term has a final degree equal to the degree of its highest degree term, so the expression 3x + 12 has degree 1.
