We have:

 

2n + 50  =  4n + 10    where n is the number of cupcakes that equalize the cost

 

subtract 2n, 10 from each side

 

40  =  2n    divide both sides by 2

 

20 = n

Let n be the number of cupcakes:

 

2n + 50=4n + 10

4n - 2n=50 - 10

2n=40

n=20 number of cupcakes needed.
