the number of stamps Andy has was 2/5 that of Bob's. Bob gave 1/2 of his collection of stamps to Andy. What is the new ratio of the number of stamps Andy has to the number of stamps Bob has?

 

 

 

this question appeared in my school paper and I want to know if I got the correct answer . My answer was 9:5. Was I correct? Thanks so much ! smiley

Let A be the original number that Andy had and B be the original number that Bob had.

 

A/B = 2/5     (1)

 

After the transfer of stamps the new ratio, r is   r = (A+B/2)/(B/2)  or r = 2A/B +1  

 

Using (1) we get  r = 2*2/5 + 1  or  r = 4/5 + 1  or r =  9/5, so you got the correct answer.
