Suppose the line through points through (n,6) and (1,2) is parallel to the graph of 2x+y=3. What is n?

Let's get the slope of the given line....

2x + y = 3      subtract 2x from both sides

y =  = -2x + 3      an inthis in the form  y = mx+ b    where mis the slope, so the slope of the given line =  -2

And since parallel lines have the same slope, the first line will have the same slope....so we can solve this equation:

[ 2 - 6]  / [ 1  - n]  = -2    simplify

-4 / [ 1 - n]   = -2           multiply both sides by [  1 -n ]   and we have

-4  = -2 [ 1 - n]

-4 = -2 + 2n      add 2 to both sides

-2  = 2n               divide both sides by 2

-1  = n

cool cool cool
