So I had to do a paper in science about decimeters, centimeters, etc. and one of the problems was 300 millimeters times 400 millimeters. I looked up the answer and it said it was .12 m squared. Why is it this and not 120,000 like I thought it would be?

120,000 square millimeters   =   0.12 square meters

Because.....

300 millimeters  =  0.3 meters

400 millimeters  =  0.4 meters

0.3 meters * 0.4 meters  =  0.12 square meters     smiley

120,000 square millimeters is the correct area...they just gave it in square meters instead.
